Google has announced last week a new improvement to the dashboard of the Google Analytics.

Custom Dashboards

For most Google Analytics users, the dashboard is the first thing you see when viewing your reports. Dashboards in the new version of Google Analytics have been redesigned to be completely widget-based and highly customizable. There are four types of widgets: Metric, Pie Chart, Timeline, and Table. This gives you the ability to choose the visualization that best suits the data you want in your dashboard. The Dashboard uses a three-column layout, and you can customize the layout by dragging and dropping the widgets as you’d like.

Metric: Shows the value of a metric and a sparkline of that metric over the selected time period
Pie Chart: Best suited for displaying breakdowns of a metric by a certain dimension. E.g., Visits by Browser Type.
Timeline: A graph of any metric over time. You can also compare two metrics in the same graph.
Table: Think of this as a mini-custom report. You can show one dimension with two metrics and up to 10 rows of data in a table.

Multiple Dashboards

A common request we heard from you all is that one dashboard isn’t enough. You told us that wanted the ability to customize multiple dashboards for different analyses. Thanks to the new Google Analytics platform, we’re happy to give you the power to create multiple custom dashboards, up to 20 per profile. You might start with an overall “Company KPIs” Dashboard that includes the most important performance indicators for your company, then create an “SEO” Dashboard for your search engine optimization efforts, and a “Content” Dashboard that centers around the content of your website. We’d love to hear what you do with the other 17 slots.

Going Forward

The core functionality for the new dashboards is ready for you to use, but this isn’t everything we’ve planned for dashboards in the new version. iPad 2 Glitches and Manufactures Mistakes

Finicky FaceTime
Apple's support forums are seeing a growing number of complaints saying FaceTime video chat freezes after being used for the first time.
The problem is solved by restarting the iPad.

Backlight Bleeding
More problematic than glitchy FaceTime software are the reports of iPad 2 backlight leakage. Some iPad owners, perhaps most famously Cult of Mac's David Martin, hav e noticed uneven patches of light showing up around the edges of the tablet's display.
Martin took his original model in to be replaced and an Apple Genius noted that the replacement also suffered from the same problem. Sounds like a manufacturing problem that will need to be resolved in the future.

Camera Issues
Cult of Mac heard reports of wonky colors popping up in a few frames of video. Writer Brian Sweet said he noticed the problem in his iPad 2 since launch day. He isn't sure if the problem is hardware or software-related.
Sweet took a two and a half minute video driving through a car wash and noticed the issue popped up three times.

Firefox 4 Beats IE9 in Downloads

Microsoft Internet Explorer's ironic case of having a sizeable installed base and yet being considered an underdog changed with the release of Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), which caused quite a scare in the Firefox and Chrome camps with a staggering 2.35 million downloads within the first 24 hours of its release. Much of IE9's success is attributed to the adoption of new features like HTML5 and hardware graphics acceleration support. However, Mozilla reaffirmed its might by raking in 4.7 million Firefox 4 downloads in the same time frame according to Mozilla Glow website that keeps logs of the download.

This is far lower than the first day downloads of the previous version of Firefox, which clocked in 8 million within 24 hours; albeit that event was highly promoted by Mozilla. Firefox 4 also packs in the same features introduced by IE9, and additionally faster page loading, optimised JavaScript support, improved security and privacy options, and incorporation of new standards like WebM video and WebGL 3D graphics. Firefox ups the ante with 3D acceleration support that's even compatible with Windows XP.

Over the years, Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser has seen a steady decline in user base thanks to a clunky interface, constant glitches, poor security, and an abject lack of features. It had become a browser that no one touched with a ten foot pole, let their technically inclined peers term them n00bs. However, that changed with Internet Explorer 9, which ushered in new technologies like in-built graphics acceleration support, HTML5, CSS 3 mated to a much improved UI, better security, host of new features and better performance and stability was well.

Mozilla is counting upon the latest iteration to increase its user base, which is already pegged at 400 million. However, the browser giant had to contend with Chrome, a relative newcomer, spoiling its party by beating it in the global browser usage pie-chart. Chrome now finds home with 10 percent of Internet devices worldwide. Question is, will Firefox 4 help Mozilla regain its spot from Google's Chrome? Only time will tell.

The good thing is that your efforts will always stay visible in search results of you continue to push them out the right way. Monitoring the results of your search engine optimization campaign might not be as difficult as you think. Chances are if you have done your search engine optimization correctly it is working and its success depends on how much. Everyone has a different definition of success when it comes to SEO so make sure you are dealing with apples to apples when trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t. Search engine marketing is a slow process that takes time so make sure you understand that results will take time as well.

Analytics: If you don’t have any analytics tracking on your website that should be the very first thing you do. We recommend Google analytics because it is free and very powerful. Google Instant — Instantly Changing the Way We Search?

Google announced a new feature this morning named Google Instant that focuses on returning search results faster than ever. The already fast search engine just got faster by returning results as you type.

According to the product page it intends to bring:

Faster Searches: By predicting your search and showing results before you finish typing, Google Instant can save 2-5 seconds per search.
Smarter Predictions: Even when you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, predictions help guide your search. The top prediction is shown in grey text directly in the search box, so you can stop typing as soon as you see what you need.
Instant Results: Start typing and results appear right before your eyes. Until now, you had to type a full search term, hit return, and hope for the right results. Now results appear instantly as you type, helping you see where you’re headed, every step of the way.

We’re just diving into this and looking at all the possible impacts on SEO but some initial thoughts we’ve had include:

A discussion on Open Source vs. Closed Source

Much has been written about free software, open source software and commercial software. If however the discussion on as to which is the best option seems to be endless.

However in 2010 with the output. Net 4.0 on March 22 brought back another round to access the code open source vs. closed .

But most of all it is not only the technological aspect, what about the form of marketing? .... The reality is that if you are unable to sell your products, they will not be used by the consumer.

My experience in the United States (country 100% commercial and capitalist) the general consumer is not attracted if the software is open or closed, but the benefits you have and the security or guarantee to be Offer.

Many times when the product is free to play with the double-edged sword commercial means, "If it is free is not worth buying"

On the other hand many industries prefer to buy a product with a warranty of 12 months instead of a free product with no guarantees and support charges and without being able to bring this court for damages.

Free software brings the best yet form and work efficiency, communications and teamwork is equivalent to many professionals on a project, "two heads are better than one"

In my opinion not everything that is accessible to say it is okay!, the software have ability to be easily reproduced does not mean it should be accepted, in a discussion with a colleague explained to me that the software should be free and we use formulas created by others and we will reuse without redesign.

But we are not the only profession that takes existing formulas, this means that chemical engineers, civil engineers, accountants, etc, should give their work for free? since they also use formulas in your area that are already existing??

As the computers and technology continue to race towards the future, it hurts me to hear that other professions do not have this dilemma as we have.

Steps and Goal of a web designer to make a successful website

GOAL OF A WEB DESIGNER

The goal of most web designers is to create an attractive, easily accessible and functional website that will convince the visitor to stay and interact. Creating such a website requires good graphic design, easy and intuitive site navigation and logical site layout. After all, we don’t want our visitors to be lost the first time they come in.

Visitors are impatient and studies show that most people will click away if a web page takes longer than 10 seconds to load. So is always good to optimize your photos and other graphic files to have as small a size as possible without sacrificing picture quality. There are a couple of different files formats that you as a web designer can play with, look for options and play with them.

Background color for your website is extremely important, as we all know, colors are just wavelengths of light. Using a nice and calm color will assure you that your visitors won’t be blinking their eyes and eventually leave your site because of the background color you used. So paying attention to the colors and contrasts you use is something that requires a moment of pause to think.

Site navigation should be simple and intuitive. Studies have shown if a visitor cannot access the information they want within three clicks, they will leave the site. This is called the 3-click rule. Every area of your website should be reachable within three clicks from anywhere else on the site. If you use anything other than simple text links, make sure to test your navigation in all the major browsers.

Screen resolution is a major part in web designing, having so many possible resolutions out there, makes us stop and think for a second how do you want everyone to see your website, will it be stretched against all resolution? or will it be centered? or maybe it will be left aligned?. These are question you need to ask yourself or to your clients, and if it is centered or even left aligned, make sure you use the smallest resolution that people use today, so you don't run into the problem that while it might look amazing in a resolution that you might use (for example 1920 x 1080), it might look horrible and completely wrong in someone else small resolution (for example 1024 x 768).

Another important aspect in designing a good website is the compatibility with all the browsers, Today people have the freedom of choosing one browser that they like to use, Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Safari, Google Chrome, Opera, etc. Having so many different browsers just makes our task as Web Designers more difficult, because we want our website to look identical in all browsers, but we know that's not the case, so a good practice is to preview your website in all of these and study the differences they all have with each other, in order to create a solution for that problem.

In Summary a good Web Design is a combination of common sense and good planning. Your site should be attractive and easy to use but more importantly you should think about who really is going to be using and seeing your website ‘The People’, having them in mind as you make progress will assure you that your website is going to be a success.
